Interesting article - and I found myself nodding to much if it. There was one line, however, that rankled with me.
You wrote:
"Yes, our elementary and high school system, at least in California, renders itself broken. It’s filled with teachers that punch in the time clock, sit you down for hours, and make you do work."
Overgeneralize much?
As a teacher in the California system, I would love for you to qualify that statement. What I see (and do) is exactly the opposite: I work between 50 to 60 hours a week towards creating a rigorous learning environment for my students. In addition, I attend hours of professional development every year, am working towards a graduate degree, and observe my colleagues, all in an attempt to provide an excellent education for my students. Most of the teachers I know do the same. Some of the teachers I know fit the above quote, but they are not the majority.
I can suggest that one major problem with our education system (here in California and elsewhere) is our high emphasis on a standards test that really doesn't stray much beyond measuring the knowledge base of learning. This doesn't leave much room for creating learning opportunities which invite higher level creative problem solving skills (as one would expect in Candidate # 2).
