If you haven't checked it out already, HiretheWorld is an excellent spot to find 99design-like creative contests and freelance workers. I'm using it all the time these days and it's really working out.

Interesting write up and yep, there are a great many ways to get in on the outsource scene without getting burned. Don't know if you've tried vWorker.com (formerly rentacoder). The escrow programme is fantastic.
Also, one of the ways I use vWorker is to research old projects to get a feel for the project price as well, I can see who was bidding. At this point you can simply private hire the coder or start an exact project and invite the coders you wish to use.

Hi Scott! Thanks for the credit ;)

You know, something interesting that I concluded from your article is how bad the "outsourced agent" is doing the work for those people who outsource.

What do I mean with this? Let me give a you an example: you listed 5 steps, and what is really interesting from all those steps is that every designer should have already incorporated to their work methodology the same steps, but in a "reasearch way".

And this is a "must-be" for those designers that had been the chance to study and have an academic background. So, for example, a methodology that some Graphic Designers apply to the projects includes three basic stages:
(1)"Problematization", (2)Creative Process, and (3)Specification, in a general perspective these stages should worry about all the steps you listed above. So the client could worry about he needs to and not about "effectively outsourcing". In other words this should the contractor responsability.

In brief, your article make me think how we designers are doing our work in a really bad way. And yet we'll find clients that know better how to do our work, like the 5 steps you listed above. I never worked in an outsource website, and I'm asking myself if this bad quality service, that force customers to be in charge of "do the work effectively" is maybe common in the outsource bussiness. Hope not!

Great article!

most of the times you have to micromanage if you outsource. at one particular point, in a web application which I outsourced, the title of the page was showing its ugly url because there was no title tag in the document. So I specified the problem and asked the guy to add a title tag. You know what, he added a blank title tag and closed the matter. The title was still showing the ugly URL.
